What's a
Proxy?
E-Proxy belongs
to genre of tool called a "proxy." A proxy is a
search security and management tool that In an enterprise that
uses the Internet; a proxy server is a server that acts as an
intermediary between a workstation user and the Internet so that the
enterprise can ensure security, administrative control, and caching
service and protection from outside intrusion.
To the user, the proxy server is invisible; all Internet requests
and returned responses appear to be directly with the addressed
Internet server. (The proxy is not quite invisible; its IP address
has to be specified as a configuration option to the browser or
other protocol program.)
The electronic mail proxy developed
by
E-Mail, Inc. allows you to filter, block
and view electronic mail data in a similar fashion that
does not interrupt or disturb your message flow .
E-Proxy
makes itself imvisible to outside correspondents, while giving
you control of your e-mail and a new weapon against
spam.
What can E-Proxy
do?
E-Proxy 2000 provides benefits for
anyone, professional or personal, who needs to take control
over their electronic mail. If you are being deluged by
junk mail, try E-Proxy and fight back. E-Proxy uses a secret
weapon, which, when aimed against spammers, kills them off
one-by-one. In this role alone, E-Proxy makes itself
invaluable.
What do I need to run
E-Proxy 2000?
You need a computer running Windows 2000 or Windows
XP and a mail client with a POP account. E-Proxy runs on
port 110, dedicated to the Post Office Protocol. If you
have a POP account then you already use a mail server, either from
home or in your corporate work environment. Your POP account
needs to know the name or IP address of your mail server to function
properly, as well as have dedicated access to port 110. This
is all that E-Proxy needs, as well. You need Outlook or your
POP mail client running at the same time as E-Proxy.
How does E-Proxy work with
Outlook Express?
E-Proxy works great with Outlook
Express. All you need to do is (1) change your mail
profile under Tools->Accounts->Mail->Properties
and change the Incoming Mail (POP3) server to the name of your local
computer and (2) change under "Advanced" the "Incoming Mail
(POP3)" port to 3211 (or whatever you have the E-Proxy port
set to under "Settings" in the E-Proxy program). That's
it! You should be able to start polling inbound mail right
away. You can check your connection success by brining up the
"Debug" display under "Views".
What's great about using Outlook Express is you
can use it to receive your POP mail and your Hotmail at
the same time by having two mail accounts setup, one for
each.
Create a "rule" in Outlook
Express to enable the filtering and create a Junk Mail
folder for yourself (remember rules do not work web mail, like
Hotmail, but do work for POP mail). Apply the rule as
follows: Go to Tools-Message Rules->Mail and select
"New." Create a rule as follows: Check (1) "apply this after
the message arrives" and (2) "where the message body contains
This Message Filtered by E-Proxy." and (3) "Move it to
the Junk Mail folder." Select "Apply Now" and the
"OK" button. You can customize the rule to be anything you
want. For example, you might want to move junk mail directly
to the "Delete" folder instead of the "Junk Mail" folder that you
created. Make sure the E-Proxy junk mail trailer line is
spelled exactly. It should read (with the exact case and
punctuation): This Message Filtered by E-Proxy.
Import your Outlook Address Book into
E-Proxy's "exclude" file (option 1).
1) First in the Address Book from within Outlook
Express choose the "Export->Other Address Book"
selection from the "File" menu.
2) Select the choice of
exporting your contacts to a "Text File (Comma Separated Values).
When you select this choice, save the file and select the "E-Mail
Address" field only and save as a "Text File (.txt)" from the
"Browse" button. After successfully exporting, close the "Import
Address Book" dialog window.
3) Now you can enter this newly
created "Text" file in NotePad and copy and paste the entries
(except the first title line of the "E-Mail Address" field chosen)
directly into the "Exclude.Txt" file located in the E-Proxy home
folder. Or you can select the "Open Category Files with NotePad"
option under "Tools" in E-Proxy and then use the "Open Category"
button under "Keyword Categories" in E-Proxy to cut/paste the
address book e-mail addresses directly into the open "exclude"
Notepad category file.
Import your Outlook
Address Book into E-Proxy's "exclude" file (option
2).
1) Or you can choose the Microsoft Exchange Personal
Address Book and save your Outlook Express Windows Address Book
(WAB) as a Personal Address Book (PAB) file.
2) If you do not
have a default profile created for Internet Mail you will need to
create one now. To do this you should have Windows Messaging
installed from Add/Remove Programs->Windows NT Setup (Windows NT)
or Add/Remove Windows Components (Windows 2000).
3) Select your
newly save Outlook Address book when prompted through the Interet
Mail profile creation.
4) You can now run the "Import Address
Book Wizard" available under "Tools" in the E-Proxy main menu. This
utility will prompt you to logon on to your newly created profile
and allow you to select your contacts. Select them individually or
in bulk (your choice) and use the "OK" button to save them to the
E-Proxy "exclude" file.
Why doesn't E-Proxy work on
Windows 95/98?
Windows 95/98 do not possess the
technology required to make E-Proxy work. E-Proxy uses server
technology that was previously unavailable on the personal desktop
until the arrival of Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
Why use POP mail over
Web-based mail?
You should use POP mail over Web
mail because POP mail is inherently more secure. To control
spam you need to be able to filter the mail over the incoming
connection. It's better to separate the mail from web activity
which you can do by using POP mail accounts. Then you can
apply a spam filter, like E-Proxy, to the inbound mail port to
filter out the spam.
Why is E-Proxy better than other
spam filter products?
E-Proxy is
one-of-a-kind. Several features make E-Proxy different from
other spam filters: (1) You can set up your own filters and include
whatever you want rather than having the terms of the filter
dictated to you. (2) You leverage your mail client's rules
feature to enable the filtered messages to go whereever you want
them to go, rather than having this determined for you. (3) You
do not need to maintain two
separate areas, such as a quarantine area, since E-Proxy
keeps all filtering activity within your mail client and
does not make you go outside the mail
client.
